Make-up Tips and advice

Tips for brides:

  • To avoid getting a stiff neck after a make up session, choose a chair as high as possible and use cushions, the yellow pages or whatever you can find to make yourself even higher. Ideally, you should be (sitting down) at the same level than the make up artist.

  • Ask your make up artist to use one of your lipsticks (if possible) so that you can retouch it during the day. You can ask your mum or one of your bridesmaids to carry it for you. It is especially advisable to do it before you have your pictures taken. Lipstick dresses the face, if you don't have any, your face will look washed off.  Some times you can note down the make and number of the lipstick she is using on you, although some times make up artists buy make up in professional make up stores that you wouldn't find in the high street.

  • If you are doing your own make up, make sure you apply loose powder after the foundation to stop your face from shining. If a make up artist does it for you, it is advisable that you retouch it as well before having your pictures taken.

  • Your make up artist will give you a straw for you to drink while you are at home, before you leave, but just in case she doesn't make sure you have some at hand so that your lips make up won't get ruined. (This also applies to your mum and bridesmaids).

  • If you are doing your own makeup, use white loose powder around the eyes to give you a fresher look (Don't worry, you won't look like a ghost).

  • Traditionally, brides wear very natural make up, but be careful not to go too natural, otherwise, when you have your pictures taken your face will look washed off. I usually recommend having a not so natural make up so that it also looks good on the photographs as well.

  • A pink toned blusher will give you a more natural and fresh look whereas a terracotta one will make you look more sophisticated. If you don't suit pink tones go for peach.

  • Natural light is always the best for day make up. Place your self facing a big window for the best lighting.

    For Evening make up:

  • For a penetrating look, use kohl on the inner part of your eyelids.

  • Always make sure that you buy a thick lip gloss. Very thin ones don't stay in place for long and tend to drip outside of your lips.

  • Try not o mix up warm colours with cold colours or you will look like a cartoon character.

Make up tips for Acne sufferers:

  • Always apply the concealer after the foundation

  • Put the concealer just covering the actual spot (not around it) and tap with your finger over it (don't rub)

  • Set everything by applying some loose powder over it.

  • Avoid the temptation of putting heavy foundation all over, it will make your make up look caked up and artificial. You can have a light foundation all over and concealer of exactly the same colour on the problem areas.

  • Have 10 grams of vitamin B5 a day (in three separate doses). Recent research shows that a lack of this vitamin is the root cause of acne, I can personally guarantee this works. Vitamin B5 is not cheap, but it can be found on EBAY at much lower prices than other stores such as Holland and Barrett.

  • If you emphasize your eye and lip make up by using bright and dark colours, the brighter tones will withdraw attention from your spots.

  • A little bit of eye drops on the problem area, will take the redness out of the spots for a few hours.

    To look ten years younger:

As you get older, wear less makeup.  Reduce the amount of makeup you wear and apply it only where you need to hide imperfections or enhance your assets.

As you grow older your skin looses some of it natural oils, to compensate for it, use moisture filled products for a glowing look. Avoid matte makeup, and use sheer foundation or moisturiser to achieve a glowing younger look.

To even out your tone, don't apply heavy foundation all over your face. Just apply a little bit where needed.

To get colour and make your face glow without using heavy foundation, use a tinted moisturiser (Dermalogica make great sheer ones) or blend tinted moisturizer with foundation for more coverage.

When you want a sun kissed look, use a bronzer instead of damaging your skin in the sun. Before you apply the bronzer, apply some foundation or tinted moisturiser where needed to even out the skin.

Avoid or tone down shimmery eye shadows as you get older as they reflect the light and highlight your imperfections.

Use a eyelash curler to open up your eyes for an instant eyelift.

If you have wrinkled, thin or dry lips avoid using frosty lipsticks as they also reflect the light and bring out your imperfections.

To make your lips look young and plump use sheer lipsticks. When using lip gloss, or shiny lipsticks use a lip liner as it stops them from feathering. Applying gloss at the centre of your lips and then extend from there.

Go for creamy, hydrating, lipstick rather than matte that can dry your lips if you'd like to add some colour to your lips. Use a matching lip liner for definition. Creamy , hydrating lipsticks will keep your lips moisturised.

Soften your features with discrete tones and avoid harsh colours, or colours that contrast with each other, like deep black eye colour with red lips.

    OTHER THAN MAKE UP...

Botox is still my big favourite, as more places start doing it, prices keep going down. It doesn't hurt and the results are amazing. The only problem is that it can only be used on the top half of your face (not for lines around your mouth)

Any cream with Retinol (watch that the concentration is not too low) is a good antiageing tool, the only problem is that it can irritate skin and makes your skin sensitive to the sun so it must be used with a sunblock and avoided during the summer months.

The latest!! - Alyria - In a clinical study, it was reported that Alyria gave better results that Strivectin.  We have tested it over a period of months and noticed a significant reduction in the appeareance of wrinkles.  This cream is not contraindicated during pregnancy which is nice for a change and it can be safely used around the eyes as it is very mild.  It is also non-comedogenic, a dream come true.  Only downside, the price (but bottle is huge), and also that they don't sell it in the UK so, you'll have to get it shipped from the US. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

How do I know what make up is right for me?

People often come to our make up lessons asking for recommendations of what make up is right for them.  Our make up artists can recommend products that in their experience, has worked well on people with skin types similar to yours but the choice is ultimately yours.  No make up artist, however experienced she is, can tell you if something is going to work with you for sure.  The only way to find out what make up is right for you is to try it.  We are not all the same, you, better than anybody else, know how your skin behaves and only you are able to test different types of make up and see the long term effects, even if you don't have sensitive skin, some make up can react on your skin.  It is also a question of what you are used to, you may get a recommendation and then once you use it, you may find that it looks too bright or too heavy or too light for your liking, then it's time to move on and try something else, you have to wear what you like and you feel comfortable with not what other people tell you to. Sometimes, with make up as well as with other skin care products, you have to try a few before you find the one that is right for you this can be expensive so, try sample sizes whenever you can and you could save a small fortune.  And do not settle for anything that is just OK, the market is saturated with different brands and colours and textures so there has to be the right thing for you out there.

More expensive is not always better.  Don't let big corporations with massive margins manipulate you. Even though you generally get what you pay for, my advise is to test products and make up your own mind.  Don't let a posh brand or hefty price tag make up your mind for you.

The worse advice you can ever expect to get is at a beauty counter.  Their sales people are not always qualified and their advice is not impartial, they often work on commission, so they will recommend anything even if it is wrong for you just to get your money.
