Make-up Tips and advice

  • Good lighting is very important, if you do your make up in poor lighting, you will not notice your mistakes and will not get a true idea of what you will look like under stronger lighting. Natural light is best.

  • Using appropriate good quality brushes, is part of the secret to an amazing result.

  • Don't forget to 'set' your foundation with loose powder to avoid your skin looking shiny in photographs.

  • Drinking with a straw will help your lipstick stay intact for longer.

  • Brides should be careful not to go too natural on the make up, otherwise, your face will look washed off on the photographs.

  • A pink toned blusher will give you a more natural and fresh look whereas a terracotta one will make you look more sophisticated. If you don't suit pink tones go for peach.

  • For a penetrating look, use kohl on the inner part of your eyelids.

  • Always make sure that you buy a thick lip gloss. Very thin ones don't stay in place for long and tend to drip outside of your lips.

  • Try not o mix up warm colours with cold colours or you will look like a cartoon character.

Make up tips for Acne sufferers:

  • Apply the concealer after the foundation and apply it covering the actual spot (not around it) and tap with your finger over it (don't rub)

  • Set everything by applying some loose powder over your face.

  • Putting heavy foundation all over your face will make your make up look caked up and artificial. You can have a light foundation or tinted moisturiser all over your face and concealer of exactly the same colour of the foundation on the problem areas.

  • You can draw attention from your spots by emphasizing your eye and lip make up by using bright and dark colours.

  • Putting some eye drops on the problem area, will take the redness out of the spots for a few hours.

    To look ten years younger:

As you get older, reduce the amount of makeup you wear and apply it only where you need to hide imperfections or enhance your assets.

With age, our skin looses some of it natural oils, to compensate for it, for a glowing look use moisture filled products. Avoid matte foundation, and use a sheer one or tinted moisturiser to achieve a glowing younger look.

Don't apply heavy foundation all over your face. Just apply a little bit where needed.

You can blend tinted moisturizer with foundation for more coverage.

When you want a tanned look, use a bronzer instead of damaging your skin in the sun. Before you apply the bronzer, apply some tinted moisturiser or foundation where needed to even out the skin.

Avoid or tone down shimmery eye shadows as they reflect the light and highlight your imperfections.

For an instant eyelift, use a eyelash curler to open up your eyes.

If you have dry, thin or wrinkled lips avoid using frosty coloured lipsticks as they reflect the light and bring out all your imperfections.

To make your lips look plump and younger use sheer lipsticks. When using lip gloss, or shiny lipsticks use a lip liner as it stops them from feathering.

Go for creamy, hydrating, lipstick that will keep your lips moisturised if you'd like to add some colour to your lips. Use a matching lip liner for definition. Creamy , hydrating lipsticks will keep your lips moisturised.

Soften your features with discrete tones and avoid bright colours, or colours that contrast with each other, like deep black eye colour with red lips.

    OTHER THAN MAKE UP...

Botox is a celebrity favourity, and as it popularises, prices go down. It doesn't hurt and the results are quite spectacular. It can only be used on the top half of your face (not for lines around your mouth)

Any cream containing a good concentration amount of Retinol is a good antiageing tool, although it can irritate skin and makes your skin sensitive to the sun so it must be used with SPF 30 and avoided during the summer.

The latest!! - Alyria - In a clinical study, it was reported that Alyria intense wrinkle correction gave better results that Strivectin, the leading antiwrinkle cream.  This cream is not contraindicated during pregnancy and it can be used around the eyes as it is very mild.  It is also oil free, making it suitable for acne sufferers.  It's not cheap, and they don't sell it in the UK so, you'll have to get it shipped from the US.

How do I know what make up is right for me?

People often come to our make up lessons asking for recommendations of what is the right make up  for them.  An experienced make up artist, can give you an indication on what products are likely to work for you but the best way to find out  is to try it in terms of potential allergies and also to check if you are comfortable with the shade and the texture.  When it comes to cosmetics, sometimes you have to try a few before you find the one that is right for you. Since this can be expensive, try sample sizes whenever you can. Also, you don't have to settle for anything that is just OK, the market is saturated with products so there has to be something right for you if you keep looking.

More expensive is not always better.  Don't let big corporations with massive margins manipulate you. Although you generally get what you pay for, our advise is to test products and make an objective assessment.  Don't let a posh brand or hefty price tag impress you.

The worse advice you can ever expect to get is at a beauty counter.  Their sales people are not always qualified and their advice is not impartial, they often work on commission, so they will recommend anything even if it is wrong for you just to get your money.
